Menstrual Hygiene Day at Margreth Hugo Capota High School
On May 28, 2021, Mother Africa International Trust joined the global community in celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day at Margreth Hugo Capota High School in Masvingo. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about menstrual health challenges faced by young girls and women, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources to manage their menstrual health with dignity.
Breaking the Silence on Menstrual Health
Menstruation remains a taboo topic in many communities, leading to shame, stigma, and misinformation. Many girls miss school due to a lack of access to sanitary products and proper menstrual hygiene education. To address this, Mother Africa International led an awareness session, with keynote speaker Ms. E. Charumbira
Ms. E. Charumbira educated students on the following:
Proper Menstrual Hygiene
Girls learned how to stay clean and healthy during their periods. They were taught how to use, change, and dispose of sanitary pads. Washing hands and staying hydrated were also emphasized.
Breaking Menstrual Myths
Many believe periods are shameful or unclean. This is false. Trainers explained that menstruation is natural and normal. Girls were encouraged to feel confident about their bodies.
Talking About Periods
Menstruation is often a secret. This must change. Girls were encouraged to speak openly at home and school. Boys and teachers were also involved to create a supportive environment.
Speaking at the event, Tirivashe Marinda, Programs Manager of Mother Africa International, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting young girls, stating:
“Menstrual health should never be a barrier to education. By providing the right knowledge and resources, we are ensuring that girls stay in school, grow in confidence, and reach their full potential.”
Providing Essential Support
In addition to education, Mother Africa International distributed sanitary pads to all 98 girls at the school. This simple yet impactful gesture ensured that these young girls could attend school without disruption, boosting their confidence and overall well-being.
